Can a configurator handle thousands of product options?
Evaluate large configurator catalogues using representative choices, search, dependencies, model loading and catalogue administration rather than option counts alone.

A configurator's ability to handle a large catalogue depends on how product data, rules, assets and user choices are organized. A claim about the number of options is not enough. Test representative customer tasks and the administrator's update process using realistic catalogue complexity.
Distinguish data volume from decision complexity
Thousands of independent finish labels create a different challenge from hundreds of tightly dependent components. Large geometry files create another challenge. Describe the actual catalogue structure so the supplier can explain the proposed approach.
Avoid making every customer browse every item. Product family, account permissions and earlier selections can narrow the relevant choices. That filtering must remain correct when the catalogue changes.
| Catalogue characteristic | Evidence to request |
|---|---|
| Many independent options | Search and selection remain usable |
| Dependent choices | Correct filtering and understandable restrictions |
| Large visual assets | Appropriate loading and product-state retention |
| Dealer-specific availability | Correct results under ordinary accounts |
| Frequent updates | Maintainable publishing and regression process |
Test a difficult customer journey
Choose a product with many applicable accessories and several meaningful restrictions. Ask a user to find a particular finish, cross a dimensional threshold and change an earlier choice. Measure the complete task under agreed device and network conditions.
Then reopen the saved project. A system that feels fast only before selections are retained may not fit your sales process. Include an older project affected by a catalogue change.
Include catalogue administrators in performance acceptance
Search speed is only part of the operating problem. An administrator may need to update a category, replace a material reference or identify affected products. Ask that person to complete a representative change without manually editing every item.
Also inspect failure behaviour. A missing asset or invalid mapping should be identifiable rather than producing a partially broken journey that appears to have accepted the selection.
Give Configurix representative data, not just a large number
For a Configurix performance specification, provide sample catalogue structures, asset files and important customer tasks. Agree the test conditions and acceptable outcomes for the proposed custom software. Do not infer performance for your range from a demonstration with a different product structure.
Is one product with many variants equivalent to many product families?
No. Different geometry, rules and receiving outputs may create different implementation work. Describe those differences before comparing catalogue-capacity claims.
Should all 3D assets load when the configurator opens?
That is an architectural decision to evaluate. Ask the supplier to explain loading behaviour and demonstrate the resulting customer experience with representative selections.
